The Portage Lake area has become famous for fine hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. The lake itself abounds with fish. Many other lakes and streams in the nearby great northern Maine woods can also provide a sportsman with many hours of enjoyment. Deer, bear and moose have always been favorites with hunters, and 200 pound plus buck deer are not uncommon. The Allagash Wilderness Waterway is only about an hour's drive along good woods road from Dean's Motor Lodge. Angie and Rudy can arrange canoe trips and guides for hunting, fishing and snowmobiling.

Portage Lake offers sheltered picnic tables and a beach that is popular with the campers and general public. The lake is large enough for motor boating, canoeing, sailing and a lot of good, fast water skiing.

A nine hole golf course at Portage Hills Country Club overlooks the village of Portage and the lake.

Dean's Hotel, now Dean's Motor Lodge, has been the hub of the area social life for many years. The restaurant opens at 5:00 am serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Saturday is the big night at the lodge when live music urges the patrons onto the dance floor. Banquets are available for up to 175 people.

Snowmobilers rendezvous at the lodge and then strike off to enjoy more of the well-groomed ITS trail system, or race across the frozen lake. Cross-country skiing is rapidly becoming popular in northern Maine and Dean's Motor Lodge is the ideal spot for a warm respite.
